The girl solemnly holds a devotional image of the Holy Child of Atocha, who is a representation of the child Jesus dressed as a young Spanish pilgrim boy. The legend of the Holy Child as a miracle worker began in Spain. It came with the Spanish colonists to the New World, where it took root in Mexico and the southwestern U.S.
