More Information

Raised in Cleveland, Geesaman is essentially self-trained in photography. She has worked in both black-and-white and color to reveal the underlying structure and beauty of both the natural and human-shaped landscape. This image is one of several she made at the park surrounding the seventeenth-century château de la Mormaire in the village of Grosrouvre, near Paris. Geesaman highlights—and subverts—our human craving for rational order in the landscape in this image in which trees hulk over and grasses grow up around a delicate iron gate wrought by human hands.
