Henry Benbridge

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1743 - 1812, Norfolk, Virginia)

North America, American

Benbridge was born into a prosperous Philadelphia family and may have studied under the British painter John Wollaston who had settled in that city. Benbridge was one of the first native-born American artists to study art in Europe. In 1772, he moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where he built a highly successful career as a portrait painter to that city's elite. This painting may date from Benbridge's earlier days in Philadelphia since the sitter is believed to be a member of the Potts family of Berks County, Pennsylvania.
