Origami Adventures with Artist & Educator Christine Petrell Kallevig

Name: Beth Drozdik

Position: Intern/Café

Date of experience: November 8, 2008

Time: 1pm to 3pm

"The Saturday workshop with Christine Petrell Kallevig was a lot of fun. It was great seeing kids make their own origami art up in the galleries. Everyone really responded well to Christine and she was very easy to follow. With each fold of the paper, Christine told part of a story. She said that about twenty years ago she created “storigami” which is telling a story through the art of origami – how cool! Even the parents got involved and soon everybody was anticipating what the end result would be.

It was really interesting how we all moved through the galleries. Each piece of art that we stopped by connected with Christine’s stories. I especially liked the story she told in front of Alma Thomas’s “Spring Awakening” (our very first stop). The way she intertwined nature’s unpredictability with the suggestion of the pond in Thomas’s work meshed perfectly (not to mention the “box turtle” idea was great!).

After everyone finished their origami, we went back down to the classroom to make functional mobiles. Everyone had very interesting ways of attaching their origami. The finished products were awesome and I’m sure many of them will continue on their own 'origami adventures.'"
