Turning Down the Lights To Get in the Mood – for Halloween
"I’m a bit resentful that we seem to start celebrating holidays earlier every year. But I didn’t mind starting my Halloween celebrations more than a week early this year, because the Freakishly Short Animation Festival was so marvelous. This was the first event – and an incredibly successful one – in a partnership between the Akron Independent Film Festival and the Akron Art Museum. They do the programming, we provide the theater.
There was not even standing room available when the lights went down to reveal Tyger, which received my vote for the best film of the night. In this film by Brazilian animator Guilherme Marcondes, live action, models and various types of animation allowed you to be both inside the story and on the outside looking in on the filming at the same time. Plus, I’m a cat person, so how could I resist that tiger?
Someone in the row behind me whispered to his seatmate that they shouldn’t have started with such a good film, because how could they possibly follow that one up? Well, they did. I was delighted to see that among the films from Europe, Canada, South America and all across the U.S. there was a very strong local entry, Audition by Megan Ehrhart. All fourteen films put us in the mood for Halloween."
